On Becoming a Counsellor

My Childhood Years: Influences from My Parents and Community

I grew up in the country in the North Thompson Valley, BC.

My parents were very involved in serving people in the community, being that my father was the local Pastor.

Without knowing it at the time, I learned from my parents how to understand and support people who had difficulties. I also discovered the power of relationships as determinants of physical, mental, and spiritual health.

There was a lot of dysfunction and pain in my community. I recall feeling empathy for people and had a strong desire to see repair and healing amongst those struggling.

I observed how counsellors made a big difference in people’s lives and wondered if I could become a counsellor one day.

Overcoming My Personal Struggles

I had many challenges in childhood due to an undiagnosed learning disability and having Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD).

I struggled in school and wondered why it was so difficult. My self-worth suffered, no matter how much my parents reassured me that I simply learned differently than others.

Fortunately, later as an adult, I had the courage to go to college. It was there that I was diagnosed with ADD. The diagnosis helped me understand why so many things seemed more challenging for me than for others.

With determination, I made it through graduate school and received a Master’s degree in Social Work.

I received a lot of feedback on my aptitude for counselling, which motivated me to keep going… and here I am!

I’m Honored to Be a Counsellor

I am thrilled to walk alongside my clients and help them move through their struggles and pain so they can heal.

My motivation for my work increases every time a client conquers their problems and has more ease, satisfaction and joy in their life.

I like to think that my work contributes to a healthier, more secure, and respectful place for generations to come.

You’re one of the best therapists in Kamloops.

You bring a great deal of knowledge and experience to your work. I refer couples to you because you’re trained in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, which I believe is the premier model for working with couples.

I also feel confident in referring children, youth and parents to you because of your competence in working with families.

You have a special essence that you bring to your work – it oozes out of you. It’s obvious that you have a great ability to create strong rapport and connection with clients. Your kind and gentle approach make people feel safe to open up with you right away.

I appreciate your ethical awareness and commitment to learning. You continuously take trainings and implement new tools. Myself and my partner, Cindy Darwin (RCC), will happily continue to refer clients to you.

Letting go and giving up are two different things.
It’s essential to know the difference.
